LIGHTS. CAMERA. ACTION!
MUWCI welcomes you to the 2017 Theatre Season!
Theatre Season is an event that happens every February in MUWCI. Here, students (non-theatre students) audition to be part of a play. The reason why it’s only non-theatre students is because theatre students have their own mind-blowing performance that gains all the oohs and aahs from the crowd.
This year, Theatre Season was a success! We had 17 plays that varied in terms of performance and structure. From shadow theatre, to comedy, to non-dialogue plays, we had it all! I made it an objective of mine to see as many of the performances I could. My personal favorite show was the Vagina Monologues! I had heard about it from the performance in UWC USA and was very interested in it. Knowing that this would be one of the performances was very exciting. The performers did an excellent job in bringing out the issues surrounded with vaginas from different contexts.
Did I mention that I was in a play? I got to be part of one of the best performances on campus. REFUGEES! At first, we intended for our play to be shadow theatre (behind a white screen) but due to lack of resources, we played around with lights and sound instead. We had 5 different Refugee stories from around the world, The Rwanda Genocide (1994-95), World War 2 (1940-1944), Kurds (1986-89), Ecuador (2001) and Refugees from the future due to climate change on Pacific Island - Kiribati (2030). We each got to narrate a story and perform movements for all the other stories. This idea was invented by our amazing directors, Lara and Marie. I got to narrate the first story which was about World War 2 and it was a very emotional story. In order to get the story to the point we wanted, we had to work for long hours every weekend and during the weekday as well.
Our play was so striking and moving that we were one of the plays chosen to perform in front of the UWC Board on the 17th February. It was very overwhelming having to do the performance again. I believe that it was truly a success. I really enjoyed Theatre Season as it allowed me to come out of my comfort zone. I am truly looking forward to next year’s show!
