GOING HOME

Writer: Adala MakhuloAdala Makhulo

What even is home anymore? Is MUWCI home? Or is Kenya home?

I was confused as to whether I considered MUWCI home or Kenya home. If you asked me this question in September when I had barely been in MUWCI, I would tell you that I considered Kenya to be home and it would be that way for a really long time. But after being in MUWCI for 4 months, I consider MUWCI my home as much as Kenya. I consider all my friends in MUWCI my family.💖

Going back home was very exciting! It felt so strange for the plane to arrive in Nairobi and hear the pilot say, “Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to Nairobi, the weather outside is 24 degrees with little cloud cover. I hope you enjoyed the flight and have a wonderful stay. Karibu.” I almost burst through the window when I heard that. I was so happy and overwhelmed to be home. The first thing I did was turn on my phone, call my parents and scream! It felt so good to see everyone again. To me, everything felt the same. It was as though I had never left.

The first thing I did was literally rush to the salon to take out my braids. I had kept them for 4 months and they felt so itchy and disgusting. On the 17th December, we went to the airport to pick up my sister coming from China. It felt so good to see her again! To make it even better, both my aunts from the US were coming for the holidays as well. It was a very nice family reunion! For Christmas, I went up country with the entire family. My parents are building a lake house in the country side so we got to see that area as well. I had such an amazing time because I got to bond with my family and catch up on all the conversations I had missed.

On the 26th, we went to my mother’s countryside to spend some time with her family. I particularly enjoy going to my mother’s home because all my cousins who are my age go there for the holidays. Whenever I am with my cousins, we always have a good time. After a few days, we returned to Nairobi to cross the New Year. For this, we had a party at my grandmother’s house in Nairobi. There was such good food and good music! We had such a good time. Over the break, I also got to meet most of my friends! It was so nice catching up with them and sharing all my experiences with them.
