600 kilograms of plastic
UWC Day, on the 21st of September, is the annual celebration of UWC values that takes place around the world in UWC schools and colleges as well as in town and cities our alumni and national committees are from. In 2014, more than 70 events and initiatives were organised by UWC schools and colleges, alumni groups, National Committees, and individual alumni around the central theme of impact. The sophomore celebrations built upon the success of its predecessor, reaching over 4700 people across six continents. The initiatives ranged from speaker events to music festivals, peace walks to BBQs and the day showed cohesion across the UWC movement. It is an annual reminder and celebration of all that's positive about being part of the UWC community.
The theme MUWCI chose for UWC Day was sustainability as a measure of impact and organised plastic clean-ups around the campus and in the surrounding villages. I signed up to go cycling to Bhadas (a nearby village) and clean up the plastic around that area. A group of us rode down with paper bags and gloves to collect the plastic. We managed to do a good job and collect a lot of the plastic in the area. By the end of this, our gloves had turned from yellow to black. We managed to collect more than 15 bags of plastic. In total, the entire campus collected more than 800 kgs of plastic!
For the evening, a concert was organized where we got to dress up in our national costumes, have good food and listen to good music, with good company. For the first time in MUWCI, I got to wear my national dress from home. I really enjoyed the evening, the poetry, the chill vibes and the music.
